Update on cluster of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae cases at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital

Following the announcement yesterday (September 29) that a cluster of patients in a renal dialysis unit were confirmed to have Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE), the spokesperson for Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital gave the following update today (September 30):
In accordance with the prevailing guidelines, the hospital commenced contact tracing and identified one more female patient (aged 64) as a CPE carrier. Due to her underlying disease, the patient is being treated under isolation in a medical ward and is in stable condition.
The unit concerned will continue to adopt the following enhanced infection control measures:
- Enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures;
- Continued application of stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene for staff and patients;
- Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of the environment and facilities of the unit; and
- Arranging for carriers of CPE to receive dialysis treatment in an isolation cubicle.
The hospital will also continue to closely monitor the situation in the unit concerned. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
