Accompanied by the Chairman of the Council of CityU, Mr Lester Huang, and the President of CityU, Professor Way Kuo, Mrs Lam visited the CityU VMC to learn more about its facilities and operation. CityU established the first and only veterinary college in Hong Kong in 2014, and it was renamed as the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences later. The six-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme has been funded by the Government since 2019. Opened in April 2019, the CityU VMC is a leading one-stop veterinary centre in Hong Kong and Asia. The centre is fitted out with state-of-the-art facilities for diagnosis and treatment, providing primary care, specialist and 24-hour emergency services as well as clinical training for CityU's veterinary medicine programme and training for veterinarians in veterinary specialties.
"After years of efforts, CityU successfully established the College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, which not only provides diversified education for young people, but also enhances Hong Kong's international status in the relevant area. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of public health. Upholding the concept of 'One Health' to promote the concerted healthy development of humans, animals and the environment, the school is able to enhance the overall public health level of Hong Kong society.
"Hong Kong is promoting equestrian sports and relevant industries in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. I hope that CityU will give full play to its advantage in veterinary medicine and life sciences to nurture needed talents for Hong Kong. I am pleased to note that CityU is taking forward the work on the establishment of a campus in Dongguan and actively encouraging students in Hong Kong to take part in innovative activities and entrepreneurship. I believe that CityU will open up new room for development of Hong Kong young people," Mrs Lam said.
