Talented local choreographers to stage triple-bill dance show in "New Force in Motion" Series
******************************************************************************************
The "New Force in Motion" Series presents new dance works by emerging choreographers. It aims to offer a professional platform for young choreographers to showcase choreography, encourage development and stimulate creativity. "Click" is choreographed and performed by Chan Wai-lok, with Artistic Advisor Joanna Lee. "Interconnectivity", choreographed by Sudhee Liao, with Artistic Advisor Kelvin Tsang, will feature performers Chan Lok-hin and Jonathan Hung. "I don't mean it" is choreographed and performed by Alice Ma, with Artistic Advisor Ata Wong.
A choreographer and performer, Chan was born in Hong Kong. He has studied at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance in Austria. He completed his studies in Performing Arts Research and Training Studios in Belgium in 2019 upon receiving scholarships.
Democratic interpretation and emancipation of the audience is the major genre Chan has explored in his recent works, including the solo "Everyone knows what it means to think" (2019) and his collaboration with Mariana Miranda, "/bI'twi:n/" (2019). He performed in "Let it all out" (2018), created by Cristian Duarte, and worked with Meytal Blanaru in "We were the future" (2019). His latest collaboration, with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, was "Somnia" (2019). In 2020, Chan, together with partners, established an independent art space, "ngau4 gat1 dei6", which is a project exploring how to operate and sustain such art spaces in the local art scene and share spatial resources with fellow artists.
Liao was born and raised in Singapore. She is currently an independent dance artist, choreographer and dance educator. She has worked extensively with a range of international choreographers. Liao has travelled and performed internationally in various productions and dance festivals. Her works include performances in theatres, galleries and site-specific spaces as well as video works. Her more recent works include "Going live: dancing with enigmatic perception", which was shown in Power Station of Art (Shanghai) and Tai Kwun (Hong Kong), and "Haptic Compression" and "Hermetic Diode" by the Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series 2017 and 2018 respectively. "White Cell", a residency programme at Wing Platform and "Not Yet/To Forget", co-choreographed with Ivan Chan, was supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. She also co-directed a dance film, "Faraway My Shadow Wandered", with filmmaker Liao Jie Kai that is scheduled to premiere in the Singapore International Film Festival 2020 from November to December.
Ma graduated from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. In 2020, she received "Tom Brown Emerging Choreographer" honours at the 22nd Hong Kong Dance Awards. Ma has been involved in stage performances and has explored different media. She has also collaborated with other artists and arts groups including the HKAF, New Vision Arts Festival, West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Musica Viva, Music Lab and more. Recent works include "Wu" and "Over-master" by the HKAF, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series; "Soulless" by E-Side Dance Company; "WuDaoQingNian 2015" by the City Contemporary Dance Company; and "Upstairs Downstairs", i-Dance Festival (Hong Kong) by Y-Space. In 2019, "Wu" was selected for the New Dance for Asia - NDA International Festival in Seoul. In 2020, "Over-master" was invited to perform in Japan and Singapore, and was nominated in the "Outstanding Choreography" category of the 22nd Hong Kong Dance Awards.
