SCED visits Southern District (with photos)
*******************************************
The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, today (March 16) visited Southern District and met with members of the Southern District Council (SDC) to gain a better understanding of community issues. He also toured a social enterprise and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Jockey Club Social Innovation Centre.

Mr Yau first met with SDC members to exchange views on developments and issues of concern in the district, including matters relating to transport, job opportunities, tourism and creative industries.

Mr Yau then visited a social enterprise operated by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Smiling HeART, located at the Wong Chuk Hang Complex, to learn about the handicraft training provided to women who are mentally ill or emotionally disturbed. The social enterprise encourages the women to unleash their creativity and make unique handicrafts for promotion and sale in the community and on the Internet.

During the visit, Mr Yau toured the handicraft workshop of Smiling HeART and said he was pleased to note that it not only makes creative and practical handicrafts, including canvas, clay and wooden products, but also provides special tailor-made services. He then proceeded to the shop selling the handicrafts to learn more about the sales patterns. Mr Yau said that with creativity, people from all walks of life can create business opportunities, and the Government will continue to promote the development of creative industries to inject new energy into the economy.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Yau visited the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Jockey Club Social Innovation Centre and met with young entrepreneurs to find out about their experiences in starting up businesses and how the Centre helps inspire innovation and entrepreneurship in youth. In addition to providing co-working space and other office facilities, the Centre helps young entrepreneurs expand their networks and identify suitable investors. The Centre has so far supported about 30 youth entrepreneurs to start businesses.
