HK SciFest 2018 promotes enjoyment of science
*********************************************
The annual integrated science programme, HK SciFest 2018, will be launched tomorrow (March 17) and will run until April 25, offering over 160 activities to heighten public interest in science and technology. The festival is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum in collaboration with 91 partners and units, including local tertiary institutions and secondary schools, government departments, science institutes and organisations.

To kick off the festival, a Fun Science Carnival and the Croucher Science Week will be held from noon to 5pm for two consecutive days from tomorrow in the Hong Kong Science Museum, with events at the Lower Piazza, Lecture Hall, Laboratory and Classroom. A number of science teams from around the world have been invited to present imaginative science shows, workshops and interactive science game booths.  Science demonstrations presented by Nanogirl from New Zealand, Science Made Simple from the United Kingdom and local Croucher Scholars will help members of the public to learn about science in a relaxed atmosphere.

Other fun-filled activities of the festival include field visits, exhibitions, guided tours, science workshops, science drama shows, lectures and a forum, science film shows, fun experiment classes and science competitions. Topics covered include STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, life sciences, chemistry, mathematics and physics, technology and engineering, Earth sciences and climatology, astronomy and space technology, and interdisciplinary programmes.

With "sustaining" as the theme this year, HK SciFest aims to deepen the public's understanding of the role of science and technology in sustainable development under four categories - the individual, society, the Earth and the universe - with the message that science sustains the future. Through the festival, the Hong Kong Science Museum also hopes to support STEM education in order to nurture talent that will contribute in future to the development of society.
