Six cases successfully prosecuted by EPD for illegal waste disposal
*******************************************************************
The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has all along been committed to combating illegal waste disposal. By installing surveillance camera systems at fly-tipping blackspots and carrying out proactive patrols, together with reports made by members of the public, the EPD caught the offenders red-handed or successfully traced the people involved in six fly-tipping cases that occurred at Kwai Hei Street and Wing Shun Street in Kwai Chung; Hong Wan Road in Tsing Yi; Heung Wo Street and Sha Tsui Road in Tsuen Wan; and On Lok Mun Street in Fanling. Following the gathering of evidence, the EPD subsequently prosecuted all persons involved under the WDO.
An EPD spokesman urged members of the public to report to the department if they witness illegal dumping of waste. They can provide relevant information such as videos and photos to the EPD via the department's hotline 2838 3111 to help combat illegal activities. The EPD will issue a letter of appreciation to the person who reported the above case at On Lok Mun Street in Fanling for fulfilling her civic responsibility.
The EPD spokesperson reminded construction workers and members of the transportation and logistics sector that construction and demolition waste as well as commercial and industrial waste should be delivered to the Government's waste treatment facilities for proper disposal in accordance with legal requirements. Those who dispose of waste in public places and on the roadside will be prosecuted. First-time offenders under the WDO are liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and six months' imprisonment.
