Lantern carnivals and exhibitions to celebrate Lunar New Year Lantern Festival (with photos)

     To celebrate the Lunar New Year Lantern Festival, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present a wide range of activities including festive lantern carnivals and lantern displays for public enjoyment. Admission to all activities is free.

     Three Lunar New Year lantern carnivals will be held respectively at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC) Piazza on March 2, at Tung Chung North Park on March 3 and at Hong Kong Velodrome Park in Tseung Kwan O on March 4 from 7.30pm to 10pm featuring a variety of entertainment.

     The Xinjiang Arts Troupe, supported by the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Culture, will showcase spectacular ethnic songs, dance and acrobatic performances at the three lantern carnivals. In addition, there will be folk art demonstrations on embroidered shoes, "big-head" Buddha masks, mini-van plates and galvanised iron work including mailboxes, photo frames and lamps by local masters.

     The carnival at HKCC Piazza on March 2 will feature a variety of music and dance performances, a lantern quiz corner and roving artists. Colourful lanterns will be on display at the Piazza to add a festive ambiance to the Chinese New Year celebrations. A thematic display entitled "Happily the Fishes Leap!", which runs until March 4, showcases nearly 90 lanterns of koi in different colours and patterns to offer members of the public blessings of joy, abundance and success. Furthermore, an exhibition on traditional paper crafting, presented by the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Office, will be held from March 1 to 6 to demonstrate the craftsmanship of local masters and depicting Chinese lions making dancing and leaping movements.

     This year, Lunar New Year lantern carnivals will be held at Tung Chung North Park and Hong Kong Velodrome Park for the first time. The carnival in Tung Chung North Park on March 3 focuses on the fishing culture of Lantau Island. Members of the public will be able to enjoy fishermen's ballad performances as well as trying their hand at knitting fishing nets or attending white bean congee workshops. Other events include clown performances, crystal ball performances, music performances, handicraft workshops and roving artists. Festive lanterns will also be on display from March 1 to 4 showcasing a fishing boat, white dolphins, tree frogs, owls and peach blossom.

     Colourful lantern displays at Hong Kong Velodrome Park will light up the park from March 1 to 4. These include a five-metre-high lantern "Bicycle on the Run" sponsored by Sai Kung District Council with revolving bicycle patterns, and lanterns in the shape of a unicorn, peacock, fish and birds. At the night carnival on March 4 there will be transcendental music performances featuring Taize songs, Buddhist chants and musical instruments such as handpans, shakuhachi, pipa and didgeridoos. There will also be a lantern quiz corner, a handicrafts workshop, roving artists and a Sai Kung Hang Hau Hakka unicorn dance performance - an item inscribed onto the fourth national list of ICH in 2014.

     In addition to the lantern carnivals, the programme "Youth Night" will be held at the above venues in the evening preceding each carnival from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, showcasing the energy and creativity of young people with a variety of programmes.
