Cluster of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (December 20):
Five patients (aged 73 to 87) of a male surgical ward have been confirmed to have Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) since December 4, one of them is infected case and in stable condition. The remaining four are without clinical symptoms, one of them is in serious condition due to underlying disease, two are in stable condition and under medical surveillance and isolation, while the remaining one has passed away due to underlying disease and chest infection.
The Hospital Infection Control Team has discussed with experts of the Centre for Health Protection to enhance infection control measures according to prevailing guidelines, and will continue to closely monitor the patients of the ward.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
