****************************************
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, visited Tai Po District this afternoon (November 30) to officiate at the ground-breaking ceremony of an arts centre project in the district. He also visited a secondary school and met with Tai Po District Council (TPDC) members and district organisations.
Accompanied by the Chairman of the TPDC, Mr Cheung Hok-ming; the Vice-chairman of TPDC, Ms Wong Pik-kiu; and the Acting District Officer (Tai Po), Ms Iris Lee, Mr Lau first officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Establishment of an Arts Centre by Retrofitting Tai Po Government Secondary School project under the Signature Project Scheme (Tai Po District). The scope of works of the project is mainly to retrofit the six-storey former Tai Po Government Secondary School as an arts centre to enhance the facilities and arts space for the community. The new facilities will include multi-purpose rooms, music practice rooms and a dance room. Also, by attracting well-established performing arts groups to reside in the centre to offer high-standard arts training and performances for the community, the project will promote arts development in Tai Po District. The project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter next year.
Mr Lau visited China Holiness Church Living Spirit College afterwards and toured its recreation and sports facilities. The college is one of the schools in the district joining the Opening up School Facilities for Promotion of Sports Development Scheme. The scheme provides additional subsidies to public sector schools to encourage them to open up their school facilities to sports associations and help promote a sporting culture in schools.
Mr Lau then met with TPDC members and district organisations to exchange views on various district and social issues.
