Steering Committee on Genomic Medicine established

     The Government announced today (November 30) the establishment of and appointments to the Steering Committee on Genomic Medicine. The appointments will take effect from December 1, 2017 and expire upon the Steering Committee's submission of recommendations to the Government.
 
     To harness the potential of new technology for better public health policies and clinical outcomes, the Chief Executive announced in the 2017 Policy Address the setting up of a steering committee to lead the study of strategies for developing genomic medicine in Hong Kong.
 
     The Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, welcomed the establishment of the committee. "I very much look forward to concrete advice from the committee to enable Hong Kong to forge ahead with the development of genomic medicine to serve the healthcare needs of Hong Kong for generations to come.
 
     "The newly established Steering Committee will focus on disease-based and prenatal screening, disease management, capacity building and education. It will also review regulatory and ethical issues surrounding genomic applications," she said.
 
     The Steering Committee will be chaired by Professor Raymond Liang Hin-suen, and comprises members from various sectors with a great wealth of expertise and experience including representatives from academia, professional bodies and experts in different aspects of genomic medicine.
