Music Office to hold concerts to celebrate its 40th anniversary

Under the batons of Music Office alumni Dr Lung Heung-wing, Margie Tong, Choy Lap-tak, Choi Suk-fan and Carmen Au and Music Office instructors Pak Wing-heng, Lee Sing-wan and Hanson Tsang, the Western percussion trainees, the Kowloon Youth Symphonic Band and alumni of the Music Office will jointly present the concert "The Elements of Percussion" on December 30 (Saturday) at 7.30pm at the Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium. The concert will adopt five natural elements - gold, wood, water, fire and soil - as the theme and feature the sounds of percussion instruments.
Programme highlights will include Hiroyuki Yamazawa's "The Red Shadow on the Water Ripples", Nathan Daughtrey's "Firefly" and Ney Rosauro's "Mother Earth, Father Sky". Dr Lung will lead the alumni ensemble to perform "Rhapsody for Solo Percussion and Ensemble" arranged by Rosauro and Lo Hau-man. Some 200 trainees will sing along and play on glockenspiels Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9, 4th Movement" arranged by Chiu Ka-shui. The concert will conclude with "Rhapsody" from "Music for the Millions" arranged by Lo.
More than 800 current Music Office trainees and alumni will form various wind ensembles and give a three-hour outdoor performance named "Wind Music Buffet" on December 31 (Sunday) from 1pm to 4pm at the Sha Tin Town Hall Plaza. Admission is free.
On the same day, the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band and its alumni will present an array of colourful band music in its annual concert to celebrate their long-lasting friendship and perpetual bonds. Under the batons of guest conductors John Cheng, James Leung and Choy Kwok-tin and Music Office instructors Pak Wing-heng and Chan Pui-ling, the concert will be held at 7.30pm at the Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium.
Programme highlights will include James Burden's arrangement of John Williams' "Star Wars Medley"; Frank Ticheli's "Vesuvius", which is full of power and energy; "Fantasy Overture" by So Ka-wai, inspired by the theme of Joseph Koo's "Music for the Millions", which is the "school song" of the Music Office; and "The Origin of Happiness" by Chen Qian. Former and current band members will also team up to play John Cheng's "Auld Lang Syne".
