Travellers to be surveyed at boundary crossings
***********************************************
The Government will conduct a survey on passengers and drivers travelling between Hong Kong and the Mainland or Macau at 11 boundary control points from next Thursday (November 16) to November 29.

A spokesman for the Planning Department said today (November 10) that the Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2017 will collect information on the characteristics of cross-boundary trips as well as the socio-economic profiles and travelling behaviour of the trip-makers, including local residents, people from the Mainland and other visitors.

"Through this survey we will obtain valuable information about trip purposes, origins, destinations and travelling frequency as well as some basic personal particulars such as age, sex and place of residence," the spokesman said.

"In addition, by examining the commuting characteristics of different types of cross-boundary vehicles, we can gauge with greater accuracy the cross-boundary traffic movement patterns."

This will be the 10th cross-boundary travel survey conducted by the Government since the start of the survey programme in 1999. The information collected will provide essential data for cross-boundary infrastructure and land-use planning when formulating long-term development options for Hong Kong.

About 74 000 respondents will be selected at random at 11 boundary control points and will be invited to complete a questionnaire for the survey. The 11 boundary control points are Hong Kong International Airport, Lo Wu Control Point, Hung Hom Control Point, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point, the Hong Kong-China Ferry Terminal, the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal, Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal, Lok Ma Chau Control Point, Man Kam To Control Point, Sha Tau Kok Control Point and Shenzhen Bay Control Point.

The department appeals for the support of all passengers and drivers who are selected in the survey for their co-operation in providing the required information. Strict measures will be implemented to ensure the confidentiality of information supplied by respondents.

The results of the survey will be released by the end of 2018.
