The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, visited Sham Shui Po District this afternoon (October 19) to learn more about the latest developments in the district. He met with members of the Sham Shui Po District Council (SSPDC) and visited wholesale shops of apparel and clothing accessories and the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC).
Mr Yau first met with SSPDC members and exchanged views on district matters, including the scope for developing creative industries in the district.
Mr Yau said the Chief Executive highlighted in her Policy Address that the Government will actively look into ways for young designers to make full use of the traditional base for apparel and fabrics in Sham Shui Po District to create new synergy. He said that through today's visit he hoped to gauge views from different stakeholders on the Government's efforts in promoting the creative industries, particularly on how to foster the development of Hong Kong's fashion design industry riding on the uniqueness of the district.
He also visited several wholesale shops of apparel and clothing accessories along Yu Chau Street, Ki Lung Street and Tai Nan Street and talked to shop owners to understand their business situation.
Mr Yau then proceeded to the JCCAC to gain a better understanding of the centre's work in supporting the development of cultural and creative industries. Opened in 2008, the JCCAC is a multi-disciplinary arts village and arts centre converted from a nine-storey decommissioned factory building. It operates as a self-financed, non-profit-making registered charity with the aim of providing space for artistic creation, nurturing young talents and promoting arts and culture.
After receiving a briefing on the operation of the centre, Mr Yau toured studios of artists and arts groups. He appreciated their artworks and had friendly chats with them on their experience in artistic creation.
