SLW visits cognitive training centre for senior citizens (with photos)
**********************************************************************
The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Dr Law Chi-kwong, visited the Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service Senior Citizen Cognitive Training Centre this morning (October 18) to better understand the operation of a recognised service provider of the Second Phase of the Pilot Scheme on Community Care Service Voucher for the Elderly. The Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Caspar Tsui, also joined the visit.

Based in Yau Ma Tei, the Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service Senior Citizen Cognitive Training Centre is a self-financing Day Care Centre for the Elderly that specialises in the provision of services to elderly persons with dementia. The centre first participated in the Second Phase of the Pilot Scheme in October last year to provide day care services and home care services to needy elderly persons and voucher holders.

Accompanied by the Assistant Director (Elderly and Youth) of Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service, Ms Joyce Lee, Dr Law was first briefed by the Centre's staff on their services and observed the elderly participating in Individual Training and a Cognitive Stimulating Training Group.

Dr Law then met with a family member of a Pilot Scheme user and health care workers in order to gain first-hand understanding of their opinions and needs.

With a view to enhancing community and home care services so that the elderly may enjoy life in a familiar environment, the Government launched the Second Phase of the Pilot Scheme in October last year. The Government also announced in the Chief Executive's 2017 Policy Address that it plans to further increase the number of vouchers under the Second Phase of the Pilot Scheme by 1 000 to a total of 6 000 in 2018-19 to support ageing in place for elderly persons with moderate or severe impairment.
