HKETO, Brussels supports Hong Kong films at fantasy film festival in Spain (with photos)

     With the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Brussels (HKETO, Brussels), Hong Kong cinema is well represented again this year at the Sitges 2017 - 50th International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia taking place in Sitges, near Barcelona in Spain from October 5 to 15.

     Speaking at a reception hosted by the HKETO, Brussels, on October 8 (Spanish time), Assistant Representative of HKETO, Brussels, Mr Paul Leung, congratulated the Festival on its 50th anniversary and thanked it for its good cooperation over the years in bringing Hong Kong films to Spanish audiences. He said that 2017 is also an important year for Hong Kong, as Hong Kong is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

     "There is a very good variety in the selection of Hong Kong films this year, with works by established Hong Kong directors as well as by newcomers from our vibrant film scene," he said.

     Major figures from Hong Kong's film industry joined the festival. They are film producer Nansun Shi, who received the Berlinale Camera Award at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival last February honouring her lifetime contributions to the cinema industry; director and producer Johnnie To, whose film "The Mission" was screened; and General Manager of Media Asia Distribution, Mr Fred Tsui.

     Two categories of Hong Kong films are being screened at the Festival this year. The special retrospective "Sitges Classics – The Hong Kong Movie Experience" presents six films that have become classics, namely Chang Cheh's "Shaolin Temple" (1976), Chor Yuan's "Death Duel" (1977), Tsui Hark's "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain" (1983), Jackie Chan's "Police Story 2" (1988), John Woo's "Hard Boiled" (1992) and Johnnie To's "The Mission" (1999).

     There are also five recent titles from Hong Kong's vibrant film scene, namely Yan Pak-win's "Vampire Cleanup Department" (2016), Derek Yee's "Swordmaster 3D" (2016), Pang Ho-cheung's "Love off the Cuff" (2017), Jonathan Li's "The Brink" (2017) and Alan Lo's "Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight" (2017).

     During the reception, on behalf of the Festival, Nansun Shi and Johnnie To presented the María Honorífica Award to Mr Fred Tsui, in recognition of his career and contribution to the film industry.

     Founded in 1968, the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is the leading fantasy film festival in the world. It also screens films closely related to the fantastic genre, including action and adventure movies and black comedy, with a special emphasis on thrillers.
