The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, visited an environmental education centre and a youth centre in Islands District this afternoon (September 27). He also exchanged views with young people on environmental issues.

     Accompanied by the District Officer (Islands), Mr Anthony Li, Mr Wong started his visit by meeting the Chairman of the Islands District Council (DC), Mr Chow Yuk-tong, and other Islands DC members to listen to their views on the Government's environmental policies and to understand their concerns on district environmental issues.

     Mr Wong then departed for Cheung Chau to visit the Food Recycle Land Education Centre run by the Cheung Chau Island Women's Association, with funding from the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF). The Centre recycles more than 300 kilograms of household food waste daily and turns it into fertiliser through pyrolysis using food waste processors. The fertiliser is used for planting vegetables at the Centre and for distribution to residents in Cheung Chau and farms elsewhere for free. The Centre also organises seminars, gardening and farming sessions, and other waste reduction activities to encourage residents to participate in food waste recycling, with a view to promoting waste reduction at source and minimising food waste disposal.

     Before concluding his visit, Mr Wong paid a visit to the Cheung Chau Rural Committee Integrated Youth Centre (CCIYC). With funding support from the ECF and the Environmental Campaign Committee, a solar photovoltaic system and a small-scale climate monitoring station have been installed at the CCIYC. Environmental promotion and education activities are organised by the CCIYC regularly to raise environmental awareness among young people. Mr Wong exchanged views with the youths there on their daily lives and various green issues. He called on them to put their green knowledge into practice, make good use of resources, and adopt the culture of "use less, waste less".
