ArchSD removes two trees inside Hong Kong Park for public safety

The two trees, Ficus microcarpa and Ficus elastica, were listed as ARCHSD CW/41 and ARCHSD CW/43 respectively on the Register of OVTs and were maintained by ArchSD. During routine inspections, chlorotic foliage, unusually small leaf size and some dieback twigs were observed. Laboratory diagnosis by the Tree Management Office (TMO) of the Development Bureau confirmed in September 2015 and June 2016 respectively that the two trees had been infected with BRR disease. ArchSD subsequently took remedial measures including applying fungicide, reducing the tree crown and installing cables for the two trees.
Close monitoring by ArchSD for the two trees early this year revealed a rapid deterioration in their health and the spread of BRR disease. As the BRR infection was already at an advanced stage, ArchSD proposed to remove the trees to ensure public safety and to prevent the spread of BRR disease to adjacent trees. The TMO and the Urban Forestry Advisory Panel had no objection to the removal of the two trees, and ArchSD arranged for removal today.
