Proprietor fined for violation of safety legislation

Hongkong International Terminals Limited was fined $120,000 at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts today (July 31) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear) Regulations. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on July 22, 2014 at a container terminal in Kwai Chung. A container which was being lifted by a rail-mounted gantry crane suddenly knocked against a nearby stack of containers, causing several containers to collapse and to press onto two tractors below. As a result, the two tractor drivers were injured and one of them passed away subsequently.
