REO's response to Ombudsman's comments on computer theft incident
***************************************************************
Regarding the Ombudsman's comments today (July 18) on the Registration and Electoral Office (REO)'s computer theft incident, urging the REO to implement as soon as possible the improvement recommendations in the reports by the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau (CMAB), the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) and the Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC), the REO said that the Office accepts the comments from the Ombudsman. In fact, the REO has earlier undertaken to thoroughly implement the recommendations in the reports. The REO reiterates that it has learnt from the lesson and sincerely apologises again for any inconvenience and distress to the public caused by the incident.
The task force set up by the CMAB and the PCPD released reports on the incident in June. The REO is following up thoroughly various improvement measures in the two reports and in the Report on the 2017 Chief Executive Election of the EAC to ensure that no similar incident will happen again.
