LegCo Secretariat 2017 internship programme concluded (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The 2017 internship programme organized by the Legislative Council Secretariat (the Secretariat) for local tertiary students concluded today (July 7).

     A total of 27 students participated in this year's programme.  At the closing ceremony, they were presented a certificate of participation by the Secretary General of the Secretariat, Mr Kenneth Chen. Mr Chen said, "I congratulate students for completing the internship programme. The Legislative Council (LegCo) is where all major political contests play out. I hope the first-hand experiences students gained during the internship have provided them inspirations. It is also our goal to cultivate students' positive work attitudes and a commitment to Hong Kong through demonstrating to them the professionalism of the Secretariat."

     Student representatives also shared their experiences gained. One of the students said, "During the six-week internship, I was assigned to attach to two divisions of the Secretariat to learn about the diversified support services provided by the Secretariat for LegCo. The Secretariat's thoughtful preparation for the meetings of LegCo and its committees as well as other activities facilitates LegCo Members to discharge their duties."

     "The hands-on experiences gained in the daily operation of the Secretariat have made me understand the importance of political neutrality and impartiality when providing services to Members," another student said.

     During the internship which started on May 29, in addition to attaching to various divisions of the Secretariat, the students were arranged to meet with the President, 15 LegCo Members, and Heads of Divisions of the Secretariat. They also observed meetings of LegCo and its committees, the Chief Executive's Question and Answer Session as well as experienced the passage of a bill through participating in a mock Council debate.

     First launched by the Secretariat in 2013, the internship programme is held annually during the summer vacation of students.
