LCSD to hold lectures on Silk Road culture in August

The lectures will take place at 7.30pm at AC2, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. They will be conducted in Cantonese and some will be supplemented with demonstrations. Details are as follows:
August 9 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Appreciating Classic Plays of the Northwest"
Speaker: Wong Kin-ting
Northwestern China has been the thoroughfare to the Western regions since ancient times - it has been a place where merchants, travellers and cultures converge and interact. Regional operas in the Shanxi, Shaanxi and Gansu areas are treasures among the various opera genres. With discussion topics ranging from Bangzixi (clapper opera) of Shanxi and Shaanxi to the famous plays of the Long opera genre, the lecture will explore the world of regional operas that are unique to the great northwest of China.
August 16 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Sands and Beyond - The Art of Dunhuang as a Source of Inspiration for Composers and Performers"
Speakers: Law Wing-fai and Wong Chi-ching
Demonstration: Wong Chi-ching
Moderator: Cheung Pui-shan
The vast and desolate desert at the border is filled with bleakness from history. The votive Buddha enshrined in the grottoes of Dunhuang as well as the incalculable number of statues of deities, painted murals and scriptures form a rich source of inspiration for artists. The two speakers will share their profound feelings in the lecture.
August 23 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Aurora over the Silk Road - Xinjiang Dances"
Speaker and demonstration: Pasha Umer
Pasha Umer will talk on the history of Xinjiang and the cultural backgrounds and dance history of 10 different ethnic minorities who currently reside in Xinjiang, including the Uygur, Kazak, Kirgiz, Uzbek, Tajik, Mongol and Russian peoples. Videos and photos will be shown to introduce to the audience the unique dance techniques of the ethnic minorities in Xinjiang. The speaker will also explain how Xinjiang dance has evolved over the past 50 years and share her thoughts on the current state of ethnic dance in Xinjiang and how this rich and vibrant cultural heritage could be preserved for future generations.
