Cluster of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Tung Wah Eastern Hospital

The spokesperson for Tung Wah Eastern Hospital made the following announcement today (June 29):
Three patients (aged 69 to 87) of a male pulmonary rehabilitation ward have been confirmed to be carriers of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) since June 21. Among the patients, an 87-year-old patient passed away on June 23 due to his underlying illness while two patients are still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation in stable condition.
The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted in the ward concerned:
- Enhanced disinfection and cleaning;
- Application of stringent contact precautions, including dedicated use of clinical equipment for MDRA carriers and enhanced hand hygiene; and
- Perform environmental samplings for monitoring.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.
