Young music campers to showcase musical achievements in concerts

Presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the 2017 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp Concerts will be held at 3pm on August 6 and 13 at the Concert Halls of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Hong Kong City Hall respectively. The concerts will be conducted by internationally acclaimed maestros and are part of the summer programme International Arts Carnival 2017.
The first concert will be performed by the camp's Junior Chinese Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra. Highlights of the programme will include "Weng Lou Mi", imbued with children's fun from the Yi nationality; Satoshi Yagisawa's "FAXICVRA", which depicts the story of the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga; and Yasushi Akutagawa's debut piece "Musica per Orchestra Sinfonica". The conductors will be the Resident Conductor of the Jilin Chinese Orchestra, Wen Fengchao; renowned Japanese composer of wind music Satoshi Yagisawa; and the Music Director of the Taoyuan City Jungli Youth Orchestra Association, Joe Yamaji. Renowned baritone saxophonist Makoto Asari will be the guest soloist.
The second concert will be conducted by the Director of Music of the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, Stephen Cleobury; violist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Kuo Wei-ting; and the Resident Conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Quek Ling Kiong. Under their batons, the camp's Youth Choir, Junior String Orchestra and Chinese Orchestra will perform music pieces including the dramatic motet "Insanae et Vanae Curae"; Tchaikovsky's "Serenade for Strings in C major"; and "Prince Sang Nila Utama and Singa", featuring various Southeast Asian music elements.
The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is a major annual summer activity of the Music Office which provides intensive training to musicians in a scenic campsite setting. Participants can also enjoy recreational and sports facilities at the camp.
