More than 3 600 students participated in the two competitions. The entries were impressive and showed the students' creativity and artistic skills. The champion entries in the primary school sections of both competitions were chosen for this year's campaign poster.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Leisure Manager (Aquatic Venues) of the LCSD, Mr George Ngan, said that swimming is one of the most popular summer pastimes in Hong Kong. Last year saw a record high of over 27 million visits to public beaches and swimming pools managed by the LCSD.
Noting that there have been occasional reports of drowning at local public beaches, Mr Ngan reminded swimmers and people paddling there that, no matter whether they are strong swimmers or not, they should stay within the swimming zone indicated by red or orange boom lines, and that they should only enter the water when lifeguard services are provided. He also urged people to stay out of the water when red flags are hoisted at beaches.
Winning entries from the two competitions are now on display at the entrance lobby of the Kowloon Park Swimming Pool spectator stand until 5pm on July 1. They can also be viewed on the LCSD webpages at www.lcsd.gov.hk/en/swimhandbook/poster/index.html (poster design competition) and www.lcsd.gov.hk/en/swimhandbook/slogan/index.html (Chinese slogan competition).
The Water Safety Campaign 2017 ceremony was jointly organised by the LCSD and the HKLSS and held at Kowloon Park Arcade. Game stalls promoting water safety were set up at the entrance lobby of the Kowloon Park Swimming Pool spectator stand for public participation.
