Over 100 signatory organisations of Waste Check Charter commended for promoting waste reduction (with photos)

     The 18-month Waste Check Charter has concluded successfully with a total of 118 signatory organisations participating. The signatory organisations regularly measured the quantity of waste sent for disposal and recyclables collected and formulated concrete plans to achieve their waste reduction goals. They also shared their experience with relevant stakeholders to promote waste reduction to different sectors.

     Officiating at the commendation and closing ceremony of the Waste Check Charter today (May 26), the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, said that although the participating organisations are no longer required to submit their waste data, the closing ceremony is not the end of the programme. Mr Wong expressed the hope that the waste management strategy of the Charter could be continued and be extended further to encourage more commercial and industrial organisations to voluntarily measure the amount of waste generated and proactively reduce their waste. He also said he hoped that the waste measurement practices could be extended to other general offices, schools and private households so that they could formulate their own waste reduction strategies. Doing so would enable the public to prepare for the future implementation of quantity-based municipal solid waste charging, and cultivate the green living habit of "use less, waste less".

     The Waste Check Charter was organised by the Environmental Protection Department with the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) serving as the executive agent. The participating organisations came from four different sectors: shopping malls, hotels, universities and colleges, and government or related organisations. After signing the Charter, they were requested to submit their waste check data record once every three months throughout the 18-month Charter period (six seasons).

     All the signatory organisations honoured their pledge to submit their data on waste disposal and waste recovery regularly and they were presented with a Waste Check Commitment Award today. The signatory organisations could measure their waste either by weight or by volume. Nearly 60 per cent of these organisations submitted their monthly data by measuring and recording their waste by weight.

     In addition, 67 signatory organisations were presented with the Waste Check Promotional Partner Awards to commend their efforts in holding waste reduction publicity and educational activities. Some of the awardees were also invited to share their waste reduction experience with other signatory organisations at the ceremony today.

     Also joining the commendation and closing ceremony of the Waste Check Charter today was the Executive Director of the HKPC, Mrs Agnes Mak.
