LegCo Panel on Development visits Muk Wu Raw Water Pumping Station and Tai Po Water Treatment Works (with photos)

     As a follow-up to the duty visit to Dongjiang River Basin in Guangdong Province last month, the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Development visited Muk Wu Raw Water Pumping Station and Tai Po Water Treatment Works today (May 22) for members to gain a deeper understanding of the monitoring and treatment of water imported from Dongjiang.

     Members arrived at Muk Wu Raw Water Pumping Station in the Frontier Closed Area and received a briefing by representatives of the Water Supplies Department (WSD) on the operation of the Pumping Station as well as its water quality monitoring system. The briefing helped Members further understand the reception, monitoring of water quality and transfer of Dongjiang water.

     With the company of representatives of the Development Bureau and WSD, Members then visited the reception point of Dongjiang water at the Pumping Station to observe the reception of Dongjiang water conveyed to Hong Kong from Shenzhen Reservoir. Members observed an on-site demonstration of taking of water samples and monitoring of water quality.

     Members then departed for Tai Po Water Treatment Works to gain first-hand information of the latest technologies adopted in water treatment and monitoring of water quality. Members observed the operation of the Zebrafish Water Quality Monitoring System at the Water Treatment Works. They learnt that the System provided bio-monitoring of water quality through a computer system that automatically monitored and analysed the behaviour of zebrafishes which are highly sensitive to pollutants in water.

     During a tour to the control centre of the Water Treatment Works, Members received a briefing on the operation of the Water Treatment Works and the water treatment procedures by WSD representatives. They also observed the quality of water which has undergone various stages of treatment procedures.

     Members also visited the Dissolved Air Floatation Plant at the Water Treatment Works to observe the operation of the Dissolved Air Floatation Clarifier so as to further understand the water treatment procedures.

     Members who participated in the visit were the Deputy Chairman of the LegCo Panel on Development, Mr Kenneth Lau, Panel members Dr Helena Wong, Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Mr Chu Hoi-dick, Dr Junius Ho, Mr Lau Kwok-fan, Dr Cheng Chung-tai, as well as Ms Claudia Mo, who is a non-Panel member.
