CAS Exercise Bauhinia concludes with success (with photos)

     The two-day, large scale exercise codenamed "Exercise Bauhinia", biennially held by Civil Aid Service (CAS), concluded successfully today (May 21). The exercise aimed to test and assess members' search and rescue skills, equipment operating skills, incident management ability and overall operational efficiency under various scenarios simulating Hong Kong being affected by tropical cyclone, unknown communicable disease and avian influenza. The exercise also focused on members' efficiency in emergency poultry culling in local farms during an outbreak of avian influenza and requirements on members to follow the prescribed procedures for putting on and taking off personal protective equipment.

     About 1000 CAS officers and members from the operations, administration and support units participated in the Exercise at the CAS Headquarters, ex-CAS Headquarters, CAS Hong Kong Training Centre, Tai O and Sai Kung Country Park area yesterday. The exercise included simulations of search and rescue in tropical cyclones, floods and mountain emergency as well as tree clearance, casualty evacuation and poultry culling.

     "The Exercise was held successfully. By simulating different scenarios, we effectively evaluated our members' rescue skills and tested their preparedness for emergency operations including tree clearance, rescue in tropical cyclones and poultry culling. Members meet the required standard in the Exercise, which showed that the training offered by the Service and units was effective," Acting Senior Assistant Commissioner (Operations) of CAS, Mr Fong Yiu-tong, said.

     To further enhance the operational efficiency of members of all ranks, the CAS may refine the training programmes and operational procedures based on the exercise reports and recommendations submitted by the regions.
