Speech by CS at Grand Final of 32nd Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition (with photo)
***************************************************************
Following is the speech by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, at the Grand Final of the 32nd Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition today (May 19):
Let me say a few words in English.
I feel honoured to be invited to officiate at the Grand Final of the 32nd Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition.
I believe that debates can arouse students' interest in social affairs, liberal studies, and the world around them. Debates can also enrich their knowledge in various areas, broaden their vision and equip them with a host of skills.
These skills can be summed up by three acronyms: "A", "B" and "C". "A" stands for analytical skill to understand different views in a critical and holistic manner with a logical, rational and open mind. "A" also means articulation - that is to put over your points clearly, eloquently and confidently. "B" means building resilience and intellectual capability through the process of reasoning and argument in debates. And "C" means communication skill to express views based on convincing facts and analysis in a courteous but firm and robust manner. Each debating competition offers a valuable opportunity for students to express themselves and realise their potential.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Sing Tao Daily, the Standard and the Education Bureau for organising this annual Inter-school Debating Competition to help nurture talents for our future.
Thank you.
