The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

United Christian Hospital (UCH), with the generous donation of over $23 million from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, has established a life-wide mental health centre, the Jockey Club Adolescent Mental Health Centre, to provide all-round mental health services and comprehensive rehabilitation support for children and adolescents, as well as to facilitate medical-social collaboration through community engagement in the Kowloon East region.

A ceremony was held today (May 19) to mark the grand opening of the Centre, which was officiated by the Hospital Authority (HA) Chairman, Professor John Leong; Steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Mr Silas Yang; the HA Chief Executive, Dr Leung Pak-yin; UCH Hospital Governing Committee Member, Mr John Li; and the Kowloon East Cluster Chief Executive, Dr Chui Tak-yi.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Leong thanked the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for the generous donation. He said the Jockey Club Adolescent Mental Health Centre will help synergise the efforts of the hospital and community organisations for the sake of promoting public health. This also reflects the close collaboration between the medical and social sectors.

"The Chinese name of the Centre carries the meaning of shine, hope, optimism and courage. We hope the child and teenage patients at the Centre would become more energetic and develop a positive attitude towards life. There has been continuous co-operation between the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and the HA. I believe the model of medical-social collaboration will definitely bring greater efficiency than a single party's operation," Professor Leong added.

Mr Yang also spoke at the ceremony. "People in Hong Kong lead a fast pace of life and quite often psychological and psychiatric issues are simply ignored. The Jockey Club believes that the crux of improving people's mental and psychological health effectively is to synergise different powers, taking the approach of medical-social collaboration. Having put strong emphasis on health and medical development in Hong Kong over the years, the Club will continue to support and launch timely and diversified projects, encouraging organisations to adopt creative thinking and technologies with a view to promoting long-term social development."

The Jockey Club Adolescent Mental Health Centre has commenced services in phases since 2016, and so far has recorded more than 2 500 patient visits. Located at the podium on the first floor of Block P in UCH, the new Centre has a wide-range of facilities including a sky garden, a sensory integration training room, a relaxation treatment room and a multimedia activity room.

It also provides one-stop professional mental health care including clinical services, psychiatric assessment, occupational and speech therapy, nursing and chaplaincy involvement. Through medical-social collaboration, the Centre will facilitate "Prevention Education", "Early Identification", "Prompt Intervention", "Assessment and Therapy" and "Rehabilitation Support" for building a positive and supportive community in the Kowloon East region.
