Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected ivory (with photo)

     Hong Kong Customs today (April 21) seized about 75 kilograms of suspected ivory tusks with an estimated market value of about $1.1 million at Lok Ma Chau Control Point.

     Customs officers intercepted an incoming truck declared to contain assorted goods at Lok Ma Chau Control Point for inspection and found the suspected ivory tusks on board the vehicle.

     The case was handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.

     Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
