Appointment of Chief Executive Officer of Securities and Futures Commission

     The Government today (April 21) announced the re-appointment of Mr Ashley Alder as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). The re-appointment is for a term of three years, from October 1, 2017 to September 30, 2020.

     The appointment was approved by the Chief Executive under the Securities and Futures Ordinance (Cap. 571). 

     A Government spokesman said, "Under Mr Alder's leadership in the past few years, the SFC has continued to strive to maintain Hong Kong's market integrity, with continuous regulatory updates and effective enforcement as well as active participation in the global fora.
 
     "Not only has the SFC continued to be an effective and respected financial regulator, it has also been taking forward actively various initiatives to facilitate market development. These include the stock connect programmes with Shanghai and Shenzhen, as well as the conclusion of mutual recognition of fund arrangements with the Mainland and Switzerland.
   
      "These together have contributed significantly to maintaining Hong Kong's position as an international financial centre.
 
     "We have every confidence that Mr Alder will continue to contribute to the work of the SFC and facilitate the development of the market in the new term."
 
Profile of Mr Ashley Alder
 
     Aged 57, Mr Alder attained his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London in 1982 and graduated from the University of Cambridge with a Master of Laws degree in 1983. He worked for the SFC as its Executive Director (Corporate Finance) from 2001 to 2004. Mr Alder has held the position of CEO of the SFC since October 1, 2011, prior to which he was a partner and Head of Asia at Herbert Smith.  He is currently the Chairman of the Board of the International Organization of Securities Commissions.
