Film Archive's "The Stars, the Silver Screen and the Period Wardrobe" exhibition travels back in time (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
Meticulously designed and fabricated costumes play a vital part in boosting the authenticity of period movies and enhance the atmosphere of the stories. The exhibition "The Stars, the Silver Screen and the Period Wardrobe", organised by the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is being held from today (April 21) to August 13 at the Exhibition Hall and 1/F Foyer of the HKFA. The exhibition showcases 18 sets of period costumes to take visitors back in time.

The costumes on display have appeared in movies produced from the 1950s to the 2000s. With a variety of distinctive styles, these costumes have complemented scenes of an imperial banquet, the murky deep of the martial realm, a haunting labyrinth of the netherworld and more. On display are costumes worn by renowned film stars including Linda Lin Dai in "The Kingdom and the Beauty" (1959), Betty Loh Ti in "The Enchanting Shadow" (1960), Sylvia Chang in "The Dream of the Red Chamber" (1977), Anita Mui and Stephen Chow in "Justice, My Foot!" (1992), Brigitte Lin in "The Bride with White Hair" (1993), Jet Li and Tony Leung in “Hero" (2002), Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro in "House of Flying Daggers" (2004), Charlene Choi in "A Chinese Tall Story" (2005), Jay Chou and Liu Ye in "Curse of the Golden Flower" (2006). Certain costumes are being exhibited with the assistance of 3D scanning, which enables visitors to have an all-round understanding and appreciation of the costumes. There will also be panels and video clips introducing the preparation work of the exhibition at the 1/F Foyer.

To complement the exhibition, two seminars in Cantonese will be held by the HKFA at the Cinema. The first, entitled "Collection, Restoration & Exhibition of Wardrobe", will be held at 2.30pm on May 1, with the Assistant Curator I (Programming) of the HKFA, Miss Priscilla Chan; the Assistant Curator I (Conservation) Textiles and Specimens of the Conservation Office, Miss Angela Cheung; and the exhibition coordinator, Ms Karen So, sharing their experience on acquisition, conservation and display of artefacts. Another seminar, entitled "One Stitch at a Time: The Master of Period Wardrobe", will be held at 2.30pm on May 21 and will be hosted by costume designer Hung Kuen-hoi, who will speak about his design work and share his insights.

Admission to the exhibition and seminars is free. For details, please visit www.lcsd.gov.hk/ce/CulturalService/HKFA/en_US/web/hkfa/programmesandexhibitions/highlights/highlights46.html or call 2739 2139.
