Thematic Household Survey Report No. 62 published

This publication contains key findings of the Thematic Household Survey conducted during April to July 2016. The survey was the 17th round of the series conducted since 2000 to collect information on information technology (IT) usage and penetration.
Findings of the 2016 survey revealed that continually more people had knowledge of using personal computer (PC). The percentage of persons aged 10 and over who had knowledge of using PC at the time of enumeration was 83.3% in 2016, up from 77.4% in 2014. The increase was particularly remarkable among persons aged 45 to 64 (from 73.9% to 85.7%) and persons aged 65 and over (from 23.5% to 34.5%).
Findings of the survey also showed that smartphone had become more popular. Nearly 5.5 million persons aged 10 and over had smartphone in 2016, around 0.6 million more than that in 2014. The smartphone penetration rate rose from 77.2% in 2014 to 85.8% in 2016. The increase was particularly remarkable among the elderly. About 2 in 5 persons aged 65 and over had smartphone in 2016, compared to only around 1 in 4 persons aged 65 and over in 2014.
Moreover, significantly more people had used the Internet in 2016 when compared to 2014. The percentage of persons aged 10 and over who had used the Internet during the 12 months before enumeration increased to 87.5% in 2016, from 79.9% in 2014. In particular, the increase was substantial among persons aged 45 to 64 (from 79.7% to 92.6%) and persons aged 65 and over (from 24.0% to 44.0%).

The survey successfully enumerated some 10 000 households in accordance with a scientific sampling scheme to represent the population of Hong Kong.
