The dance drama, sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London (London ETO), forms part of its programme of events to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR 20th anniversary).
The Legend of Mulan, an ancient ballad that celebrates humanity, wisdom and courage, tells the story of Mulan, a young girl who takes up martial arts and disguises herself as a man, going to war in her father's place. The dance drama has been widely performed and has garnered accolades around the world namely Hong Kong, New York and Sydney.
Speaking at the reception hosted by the London ETO after the performance, the Director-General of the London ETO, Ms Priscilla To said, "The creative way the Hong Kong Dance Company presented this ancient Chinese classic shows how it is possible to fuse East and West, and the modern and the traditional, in a uniquely Hong Kong style."
Ms To also foreshadowed at the reception that to celebrate the special occasion of HKSAR 20th anniversary and to share the joy with friends of Hong Kong, the London ETO will be organising a whole series of business and cultural events under the theme of "Together · Progress · Opportunity" in countries under its purview.
Established in 1981 with the aim of promoting Chinese dance, the HKDC has toured internationally and has staged over 100 productions up to now, many of which were highly popular with critical acclaim.
