AFCD commemorates 40th anniversary of country parks (with photos)
***************************************************************
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (April 9) held the Hiking and Planting Day at Kam Shan Country Park, which marked the beginning of a series of programmes celebrating the 40th anniversary of country parks with the theme of "Country Parks Our Legacy".
To protect the countryside, 40 per cent of Hong Kong's land area has been designated as 24 country parks and 22 special areas. The first batch of country parks was designated in 1977, including Kam Shan Country Park. The AFCD has been committed to conserving country parks and protecting the rich local biodiversity.
Officiating at the launching ceremony of the celebration for the 40th anniversary of country parks, the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, said the theme of the celebration programme signifies that our predecessors planted trees in country parks and created a beautiful environment, and the public should inherit this valuable legacy and pass on to future generations. The three functions of country parks: nature conservation, education and countryside recreation, should be spread. Mr Wong also hoped the public could share and enjoy the nature, and work together on environmental protection since country parks should be conserved and protected.
Mr Wong urged hikers to be responsible to nature, minimise the use of single-use disposable items, be committed to reducing waste at source, and take litter home.
Country parks are a valuable asset of society. Through a variety of activities, the AFCD hopes the public can share the responsibilities of conserving country parks together while enjoying the beautiful natural environment. The treasures of nature will be passed on from one generation to another. The Hiking and Planting Day aimed to promote public involvement in countryside conservation and enhance awareness of nature conservation and tree preservation.
The AFCD will hold a series of celebration events, which are interesting and suitable for different walks of life, commencing this month. These include Excursion with Experts, Plantation Enrichment Project, Trail Maintenance Workshop, "Joy" us Hiking, Go Green Family Camping, Tai Tong Fun Carnival, roving exhibitions and seminars. While celebrating the 40th anniversary of country parks, the events also provide opportunities for public participation in conserving the countryside.
