Building Safety Week 2017 promotes building safety (with photos)

Addressing the opening ceremony at the Jockey Club Auditorium of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University today, the Permanent Secretary for Development (Planning and Lands), Mr Michael Wong, said the Government has all along adopted a multi-pronged approach to enhancing building safety, adding that public education and publicity is one of the main areas of the Government's work.
"We hope that through public education and publicity, the culture of building safety will take root in Hong Kong, whereby stakeholders including building owners, occupants, building professionals, property management companies, contractors and workers will attach importance to building safety on their own initiative," Mr Wong added.
He also called for active public participation in Building Safety Week 2017, which is an annual major public education and publicity event of the BD.
The opening ceremony featured a wide range of activities. Among them was the Secondary School Drama Competition in which five finalist teams showcased their talent by disseminating building safety messages through dramas they had created themselves. Prizes were then awarded to the winning teams of the drama contest.
The BD also organised a Mini-Movie Competition for the first time this year. The contest concluded successfully recently and the outstanding participants of the competition received awards at today's opening ceremony.
Presenting awards to the winners, the Director of Buildings, Mr Cheung Tin-cheung, praised the outstanding performance of participants in both competitions. He said he believed that the participants learned more about building safety through the process of mini-movie and drama production.
The opening ceremony also featured a building safety fun fair, a chat with building surveyors and structural engineers, and a series of building safety talks in which members of the public learned more about building safety and discussed the issue with building professionals.
Buildings Safety Week 2017 runs from today to March 24, featuring a series of activities. Programme highlights include public talks, Building Information Centre Open Day, the Mandatory Building Inspection Scheme Briefing Session, the Mandatory Window Inspection Scheme Briefing Session, the Building Safety Symposium and the " Building Safety Pioneer TV Programme -The Visionary" to be broadcast today and tomorrow (March 19) on Cable TV.
