TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital announcement on tuberculosis patient case
*********************************************************************
The spokesperson for TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital (WTSH) made the following announcement today (March 3) on a tuberculosis patient case:
An 84-year-old male patient with chronic illness was admitted to WTSH on December 15, 2016. The patient's condition deteriorated in January and a provisional diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was made on January 12, which was subsequently confirmed on January 17. The patient was treated under isolation immediately after the provisional diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was made. After receiving supervised anti-tuberculosis drug treatment, the condition of the patient has improved. He is now staying in WTSH due to his underlying disease and is in a stable condition.
Upon confirmation of the diagnosis, the hospital undertook immediate investigation according to the prevailing infection control guidelines. Contact tracing of patients was carried out for those staying in the same cubicle as well as healthcare workers who had close contact with the patient, which included 16 patients and 14 hospital staff. The hospital explained to them the situation and the necessary follow-up action. Contact tracing and related investigation were finished by the end of February this year. None of them have reported any symptom of tuberculosis so far. WTSH will continue to closely monitor the health situation of the patient and staff contacts.
The case has been reported to the Centre for Health Protection and the Hospital Authority Head Office.
