Permanent Secretary for Security reviews Fire Services passing-out parade (with photos)
***************************************************************************************
The Permanent Secretary for Security, Mr Joshua Law, reviewed the 177th Fire Services passing-out parade for 16 station officers, 67 firemen and 45 ambulancemen at the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy today (February 17).

Speaking at the parade, Mr Law said, "The concerted efforts of the disciplinary forces over the years have contributed to Hong Kong's reputation as one of the safest cities in the world. The safety of a city hinges on not only a low crime rate, but also preparedness against calamities as well as the provision of high-quality rescue and ambulance services."

In many rescue operations, members of the Fire Services Department (FSD) have discharged their duties in high-risk circumstances from time to time, including fire scenes with severe heat, mountain rescues in freezing weather and incidents with multiple casualties. The FSD personnel face risks in their personal safety and psychological impacts from work, which would be hard to overcome in the absence of professional training and commitment to saving lives, Mr Law said.

The Security Bureau strives to support the work of the FSD and attaches great importance to ensure that training, human resources and equipment for the department keep up with the times. Commissioned in early 2016, the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy not only provides training for both newly recruited and serving personnel but also serves as a platform for exchanging experiences with fire and ambulance counterparts from all over the world. In addition, the FSD is adopting an active approach in developing a new-generation mobilising system to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of deployment so as to assist FSD personnel in saving lives and protecting property, he added.

Mr Law also encouraged the graduates to uphold their mission to protect and save lives. He said, "The work of the FSD is both important and not easy, and you may face difficult and dangerous situations. Each of you must spare no effort to do your best in your positions."

The parade was followed by a demonstration of firefighting and rescue techniques by the graduates. The 128 graduates, who have successfully finished 26 weeks of training, will be posted to various fire stations and ambulance depots.
