EDB's response to media enquiries
*********************************
"We are aware that HKU has just announced that Professor Peter Mathieson had resigned as President and Vice-Chancellor, and he has written an open letter to the teachers and students of HKU to explain his decision in detail. Professor Mathieson will formally leave the post by January 2018. The Government noted that this is a personal decision by Professor Mathieson, and respects his wish.
Appointment of presidents is a matter within the autonomy of the universities, for which the Government has every respect. HKU can, in accordance with the powers vested in the Council by and the relevant provisions of the HKU Ordinance and the HKU Statutes, handle the appointment of its President and Vice-Chancellor. The Government trusts that the Council will be able to swiftly identify a suitable candidate as the next President and Vice-Chancellor in accordance with the long-term interests and needs of the university as well as the welfare of the students."
