Person in custody rescued from suicide dies in public hospital six months later

A 77-year-old male remand person in custody at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre committed suicide by hanging on July 23, 2016. After rescue, he was sent to a public hospital on the same day and was subsequently certified dead last night (January 30).
At 11.05pm on July 23 last year, the person in custody committed suicide by hanging himself with a bed sheet tied to the grill bars of his cell. The correctional officers provided first aid treatment to the person in custody and called for an ambulance to send him to a public hospital for treatment. Since being rescued, he has all along remained unconscious and received in-patient treatment in the public hospital. At 11.16pm last night, his condition suddenly deteriorated and he was certified dead at 11.37pm.
The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
The person in custody was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug on July 23 last year.
