The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) today (January 28) collected an estimated total of 365 tonnes of refuse at 15 Lunar New Year (LNY) Fair sites throughout Hong Kong. The figure represented a decrease of roughly 82 tonnes compared with the amount last year.
 
     "Among the refuse cleared, some 99 tonnes were collected at the Victoria Park LNY Fair, around 33 tonnes less than the quantity last year," an FEHD spokesman said.

     The spokesman noted that this year, apart from collecting recyclables including waste paper, plastic materials and metal in each LNY Fair site, the FEHD continued to try out collection of waste wood at the Victoria Park, Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan venues, with about 6.7 tonnes of wooden planks and other wooden materials sent to the EcoPark of the Environmental Protection Department in Tuen Mun for recycling.

     The department deployed 269 staff members, 42 refuse collection vehicles and street cleaning vehicles to clean up the Victoria Park venue. The other 14 LNY Fair sites were cleaned by the department's cleaning contractors.

     The department also gathered some 1 053 unsold pots of flowers and plants donated by the vendors in the fairs. They were delivered to 201 elderly homes/residential care homes for persons with disabilities and eight public hospitals today by 22 volunteer teams made up of FEHD staff, the spokesman added.

     All refuse collection work was completed at about 5pm. After thorough cleaning, the venues were restored to their original state.
