The Tsuen Wan District Council, the Tsuen Wan District Office and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (January 21) held a launch ceremony for the Tsuen Wan Cleaning Campaign in Celebration of Hong Kong's Return to the Motherland at the piazza of Citywalk I, Tsuen Wan, to encourage members of the public to keep their homes and the environment clean.
Officiating guests of the launch ceremony included the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah; the Chairman of the Tsuen Wan District Council, Mr Chung Wai-ping; the Vice Chairman of the Tsuen Wan District Council, Mr Wong Wai-kit; the District Officer (Tsuen Wan), Miss Jenny Yip; and the District Environmental Hygiene Superintendent (Tsuen Wan), Ms Nasreen Khattak.
Following the Government's allocation of resources to 18 District Councils, the District-led Actions Scheme (DAS) has been implemented in the 18 districts since 2016, which allows District Councils to focus on handling district issues. During the year, a total of 39 projects were rolled out in the 18 districts. In the 2017 Policy Address, the Chief Executive announced that from the next financial year, an additional $100 million would be earmarked for the Community Involvement Programme, bringing its annual funding to some $461 million, for further implementation or sponsorship of community involvement projects.
To address the environmental hygiene problems in the district, the Tsuen Wan District Council has accorded priority to strengthening actions against shop front extensions and the anti-mosquito programme in carrying out the first round of the DAS. Before the launch ceremony, Mr Lau conducted a site visit to streets in the Tsuen Wan town centre and the shops nearby. He said he highly appreciated the Tsuen Wan District Council for its efforts made for the DAS to yield an effective outcome.
To share the joy of the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the Motherland with the community, a series of celebration activities will be held in Tsuen Wan District. Since the Lunar New Year is around the corner, the Tsuen Wan District Council, the Tsuen Wan District Office and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department are working together to raise public awareness of the importance of keeping the home clean and environmental hygiene through the cleaning campaign, and wish members of the public good health.
After the launch ceremony, a bus parade was held to disseminate the message of keeping the environment clean through distribution of cleaning packs at various locations in the district.
