Film Archive's "Good Fortunes Come Rolling In!" to ring in New Year (with photos)

With the advent of the Year of the Rooster, the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will screen six films involving lucky greetings in the programme "Good Fortunes Come Rolling In!" to celebrate the New Year. The programme runs from January 21 to February 10 next year at the HKFA Cinema.
Comedic screen buddies Leung Sing-po and Tam Lan-hing team up in "Happiness at the Door" (1958), giving entertaining performances with hilarious make-up. The pair co-stars as ugly rich brats who want to escape their arranged engagement because of each other's ugly looks. They then convince pretty Tang Bik-wan and handsome Law Kim-long to pose as bride and groom respectively. Playful Cantonese opera tunes are another film highlight for the amusement of audiences.
Adapted from the classic opera "Hua Tian Cuo", "Springtime Lovers" (1959) follows the marriage plans of two couples (Sun Ma Si-tsang and Mui Yee, and Lam Kar-sing and Cheng Bik-ying) being hindered by local bully Tung (Lau Hark-suen). They have to tackle the obstacles wisely in order to get married.
In "Fortune" (1960), handsome scholar Law Kim-long dresses as a girl to sneak into Tang Bik-wan's home and confess his love for Tang. However, he ends up by winning the hearts of Tang's lustful father Leung Sing-po and ugly sister Ying Lai-lei. This raucous and cleverly plotted romantic comedy about mismatches and gender confusion will leave audiences breathless with laughter.
Domestic comedy "Home Sweet Home" (1961) features Law Kim-long and Law Yim-hing as a loving married couple who are forced to act like strangers in the office due to a strange company rule. Later, the secret relationship of the boss arouses lies and misunderstandings among the couple, causing much hilarity. The directorship of Yeung Kung-leong makes for a lively film, including a musical dancing sequence with the office set transformed into a giant stage, which is both breathtaking and innovative.
"Marriage Between Poorness and Richness" (1963) follows the marriage plans of Mak Bing-wing and Fung Wong Nui, which are objected to by their respective parents who happen to be enemies. The marriage can go ahead only if the two families resolve their rivalry. A talented comedic cast including Leung Sing-po, Tam Lan-hing and Poon Yat On injects high spirits into this seemingly ordinary story, turning it into an amusing piece.
In "Sail Before the Wind" (1965), Tang Kei-chen stars as a miser who owns a jewellery store and always cuts the salary of his two eldest sons (Cheng Kwan-min and Yu Ming). Meanwhile, the wives of the two sons (Tam Lan-hing and Lee Hong-kum) plot against each other over the family fortune, creating plenty of comedy. The kind-hearted youngest son Woo Fung and his wife Ho Lan, on the other hand, try hard to patch up the conflicts and bring harmony back to the family.
All films are in Cantonese without subtitles.
