************************************************
The district visit started with a meeting with members of the Tsuen Wan District Council (TWDC), during which Mr Yang listened to their views on local affairs and on using innovation and technology to address various issues and improve people's living.
Accompanied by the Chairman of the TWDC, Mr Chung Wai-ping; the Vice Chairman of the TWDC, Mr Wong Wai-kit; and the District Officer (Tsuen Wan), Miss Jenny Yip, Mr Yang then went to Yan Chai Hospital Lim Por Yen Secondary School and chatted with students who have participated in international innovative invention competitions or are studying design and applied technology. In order to boost the creativity of students and create a learning and sharing platform, the School has been organising an innovation contest for primary and secondary schools as well as training courses for teachers and students in recent years.
Mr Yang then visited Chung Ming Sheh in Clague Garden Estate, to see how, under the Age-friendly Community Scheme, technologies have been deployed to enhance support for the elderly at home and their integration into the community.
At Chung Ming Sheh, Mr Yang watched demonstrations of elderly people playing games and conducting interactive learning for mental training, with the aid of optical multi-touch technology and portable interactive surfaces. The e-health system and a number of smart tools and sensing devices were shown, including a "smart flushing tank", key chains that record and analyse the use of community facilities, and readers that assist the elderly by reading out notices or activity posters.
Mr Yang also paid a household visit to an elderly couple living in Chung Ming Sheh and watched how they stay in touch with the neighbourhood with the aid of elderly-friendly video chat technology using an estate-wide mesh Wi-Fi network.
Under the Public Sector Trial Scheme (PSTS), the Hong Kong R&D Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management Enabling Technologies and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute have teamed up with the Hong Kong Housing Society to launch projects at Clague Garden Estate, to make life for elderly residents better, safer and more comfortable.
The PSTS under the Innovation and Technology Fund was introduced to promote the application of local R&D outcomes in government departments and the public sector so as to facilitate the commercialisation of these products and services. So far, over 120 projects have been approved for more than $200 million under the scheme, benefiting 180-plus organisations. The PSTS will be extended to cover the incubatees of Cyberport and the Science Park to facilitate commercialisation of R&D results.
