CS visits Wan Chai District (with photos)
*****************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited Wan Chai District this afternoon (December 1) and toured Jardine's Crescent, Tang Lung Chau Market and the Blue House Cluster. She also met with members of the Wan Chai District Council.

Accompanied by the District Officer (Wan Chai), Mr Rick Chan, Mrs Lam visited Jardine's Crescent, where she was briefed by representatives of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and the Fire Services Department on the reprovisioning works of the Jardine's Crescent hawker area. Through the joint efforts of various departments, the reprovisioning works of 141 stalls in the Jardine's Crescent hawker area were completed this July. The new stalls are sturdier, more attractive and more user friendly than the old stalls. During the visit, Mrs Lam also talked to the hawkers and listened to their views on the reprovision arrangements. She then proceeded to Tang Lung Chau Market to learn more about the utilisation of public markets.

Following this was a tour of the Blue House Cluster, which comprises three historic buildings built from the 1920s to the 1960s, including the Blue House, one of the few tenement buildings with balconies remaining in Hong Kong.  In 2010, the Blue House Cluster was included in Batch II of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme. After renovation and revitalisation, it will become a multi-functional cluster to provide residences, cultural and education activities, heritage guided tours and catering services. Mrs Lam said that the Government was committed to promoting heritage conservation, and was pleased to see the community’s active participation in the revitalisation of the Blue House Cluster.

Before concluding the district visit, Mrs Lam met with members of the Wan Chai District Council and listened to their views on district affairs including transport, town planning, urban renewal and conservation. She said that the Government has all along attached great importance to its partnership with the District Council, and looked forward to the continuous collaboration between the Wan Chai District Council and Government departments in contributing to improvement of community services and resolving livelihood issues.
