Cluster of Rhinovirus and Enterovirus cases in Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital at Sandy Bay

The spokesperson of the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital at Sandy Bay (DKCH) made the following announcement today (November 26):
Five ventilator-assisted children (four male and one female, aged 26 months to five-year-old) in a paediatric ward had presented with fever and running nose symptoms, and one with vomiting since November 17, 2016. Appropriate viral tests had been arranged and the results were confirmed positive to Rhinovirus and Enterovirus. One patient passed away on November 25, 2016 owing to underlining illness. The other four children are in stable condition and being treated under isolation.
Infection control measures of the ward have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
