Speaking at the parade, Mr Lai said, "The professionalism and commitment of the disciplinary forces continue to contribute to Hong Kong being one of the safest cities in the world. The Fire Services personnel have discharged their duties wholeheartedly to protect life and property, and their concerted efforts are recognised by members of the public."
The Fire Services Department (FSD) has also kept abreast of the times to meet the challenges of the rapid development of Hong Kong, and enhancement of training facilities has been an integral part. The Fire and Ambulance Services Academy, commissioned in early 2016, is four times the size of the Pat Heung Fire Services Training Centre. Mr Lai said he believed that the modern training facilities in the Academy can strengthen the co-ordination and capability of fire and ambulance personnel in response to calamities.
The Academy is equipped with diversified and advanced simulation training facilities, including fire and rescue training for various vehicle accidents on land, sea and in the air, as well as specialised training in urban search and rescue and compartment fire behaviour. The well-equipped facilities and comprehensive training greatly enhance firefighting and rescue techniques, professional knowledge and capabilities of fire and ambulance personnel in handling large-scale incidents.
Mr Lai encouraged the graduates to make use of the professional knowledge and skills they have learnt to protect life and property. Mr Lai said he was also pleased to know that one of the graduates is from Pakistan and he is the second member from the ethnic minorities to have joined the Fire Services in the past three years.
He said, "Although there is danger and uncertainty in the work of the FSD, joining the department is tantamount to joining a professional rescue team that is willing to take risks for public safety. It requires not only professional knowledge, but also courage and dedication."
The parade was followed by a demonstration of fire-fighting and rescue techniques by the graduates. The 168 graduates, who have successfully finished 26 weeks of training, will be posted to various fire stations and ambulance depots for on-the-job training to gain field experience.
