Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ng said that since its inception in 2004, the Sister School Scheme had seen the number of participating schools growing steadily. With the co-ordination of the education authorities on the Mainland and in Hong Kong, the number of sister school pairs had reached about 580. Some 70 per cent of them were Guangdong-Hong Kong sister school pairs.
"This year is the 10th anniversary of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Sister School Scheme and the 70 Guangdong-Hong Kong sister school pairs (half being Shenzhen-Hong Kong pairs) formed today is a new record," he said.
"The Sister School Scheme serves as a platform for professional exchanges between schools from the two places. Over the years, the sister school pairs, each according to its merits and goals, have engaged in reciprocal visits and diversified exchange activities for school administrators, teachers, students and parents. This not only built up friendship between the two places, but also promoted professional interflows and cultural exchanges, leading to a synergy effect.
"Looking ahead, we will continue to enhance the exchange activities, and deepen professional conversations and multi-faceted collaborations," he added.
"This being the 150th anniversary year of Dr Sun Yat-sen's birth, we will organise a cultural exchange programme in Zhongshan in December. And in view of the competitive edge of Shenzhen in high-tech development, we also plan to organise some technology themed exchange activities for sister schools to tie in with the development of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) curriculum in Hong Kong."
In addition, the Education Bureau has set up an online platform to facilitate the sharing of exchange experience and relevant information among sister schools for better educational collaborations and outcomes.
Mr Ng then joined over 300 academics and principals of primary and secondary schools from Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau to attend the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Principals' Forum 2016. With "Nurturing innovative talents in the era of innovation" as the main theme this year, the participants met to discuss the role and contribution of school leaders in promoting innovative teaching and learning in schools.
