Free exhibition at Kowloon Park to introduce air-purifying plants (with photos)

     To arouse public interest in horticulture and to enhance awareness of greening, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold a horticulture education exhibition entitled "Air-purifying Plants" and related activities this weekend (November 5 and 6) at the Arcade of Kowloon Park. Admission is free.
 
     Some plant species are capable of purifying the air by removing airborne dust, volatile organic compounds, harmful particles, micro-organisms and mould spores, as well as getting rid of unpleasant odours. Plants can also increase oxygen levels and humidity, lower the temperature and carbon dioxide concentration in the air and add greenery to the environment. These beneficial functions of air-purifying plants make them a popular addition to households and offices. Examples of air-purifying plants include cactus, Chinese perfume plant, African violet, flamingo lily, kris plant and spider plant.
 
     Descriptive display panels will enable members of the public to learn more about the characteristics of air-purifying plants. They will also introduce the ways to display the plants indoors and how to make hanging baskets with the plants.
 
     Games stalls will be set up at the Arcade of Kowloon Park and visitors can also enjoy the fun of pot planting under the guidance of horticulture instructors.
 
     Two talks in Cantonese will be held at the Secondary Hall of Kowloon Park Sports Centre. Admission tickets are required.
 
     The programme schedule for November 5 and 6 is as follows:
 
Kowloon Park Arcade:
Exhibition: 10am to 4pm
Games Stalls: 10.30am to 3.30pm
Planting for Fun: 10.30am to noon and 1pm to 3.30pm
 
Secondary Hall of Kowloon Park Sports Centre:
Talk on "Introduction to air-purifying plants and their functions":
November 5, 10am to 11.30am
Demonstration on "Creative miniature gardens with air-purifying plants":
November 6, 10am to 11.30am
 
Green Education and Resource Centre:
Guided tours are available at 10.15am, 11.15am, 1.15pm, 2.15pm and 3.15pm.
 
     The panels will also be displayed at the following venues during opening hours.
 
November 7 to 13: Kowloon Park (Arcade)
November 14 to 20: Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens (Fountain Terrace Garden)
November 21 to 27: Lai Chi Kok Park (Lingnan Garden)
November 28 to December 4: North District Park (Covered Walkway)
December 5 to 11: Tuen Mun Park (Reptile House)
December 12 to 18: Hong Kong Park (entrance to the Conservatory)
