Police Force takes on challenges unremittingly (with photos)

     The Police Force has coped with different situations and taken on challenges in the changing society in the past with unremitting efforts, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Wong Chi-hung, said today (September 24) when inspecting a passing-out parade of the Hong Kong Police College.

     Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Wong said that he has experienced over the past 30 odd years a whole host of changes in the society: from the influx of Vietnamese boat people in the 1980s to the increasing radical processions and demonstrations in recent years. Apart from responding to these events, the Force had to be increasingly prepared for duties related to counter-terrorism and beefed up contingency measures for major incidents and disasters.

     “As the commanding officer responsible for Force operations, I am both pleased and proud to note that our colleagues have demonstrated devotion and professionalism of a very high standard in discharging their normal policing duties and during special operations,” he said.

     He noted that thanks to the efforts of the Force and the support of the general public, the crime rate in Hong Kong last year has dropped to the level of 1979.

     Mr Wong pointed out that the rigorous training at the Police College helped the graduates to become good policemen with professional conduct who shared an aligned vision, common purpose and values.

     He reminded the graduates to appreciate the expectations and needs of the public, “As a law enforcement officer, we should discharge our duties with fairness, impartiality and compassion. We should also reach out and find out about people’s concerns and share those concerns with them. By doing so, I believe the services we provide will be gladly accepted and commended.”

     He encouraged officers to think positively and communicate more with their workmates and family members so as to relieve stress at work. They could also develop interests and expertise for work-life balance.

     To conclude, Mr Wong said upon his retirement, he would like to thank the Force for the nurture, trust and opportunities it gave him, as well as his colleagues for the camaraderie and support. He was honoured and pleased to have grown up with a professional and committed Police Force that continued to strive for excellence.

     A total of 35 probationary inspectors and 222 recruit constables passed out today.
